Cat Country Outfitters is owned and operated by Seth Carlisle and Brad Shaw. Located in Southern Alberta close to the beautiful Rocky Mountains, home to some of the best cougar hunting on the planet! The Hunt
A typical mountain lion hunt starts off in the early morning hours looking for a cougar track. We will cover as much ground as possible through the use of 4x4 trucks, ATV's, snowmobiles, and hiking to cover the back country and mountain trails. Once a track is located we take certain measurements to make sure it is a mature Tom. You will get first hand experience as we collar up the dogs with GPS trackers and turn them loose on the track! Through the use of the GPS tracking system we can see which direction the dogs and cougar are traveling which can reduce the distance we will need to travel to get to them. However, be prepared for a hike into some very unforgiving terrain as the big cats try to elude the dogs. A good set of snowshoes will be a life saver when the snows get deep! Once the dogs have treed the cougar, we will approach the area and you will get an up close and personal encounter with the mountain lion. The hunter or photographer usually will have plenty of time to take pictures and enjoy the moment. The hunter has a choice of using archery equipment or a rifle to harvest their mountain lion. Both can be effective, but sometimes the angle and position of the cougar make shots difficult especially with archery gear. Once your animal has expired we will do our best to provide you with top quality field photos to preserve the memories of your hunt. Depending on the location, we may be required to skin the animal on location in order to pack it out. We will take great care to make sure your animal is skinned Properly and ready for your taxidermist!
The Hounds
Without the help of a well trained pack pack of hounds, the odds of seeing a cougar are very slim. Most of our hounds have been raised by us since they were pups. Multiple generations along with selective breeding, training and experience have made them proficient in trailing and treeing Mountain Lions. There is nothing quite like the sound of a howling hound on the trail! |
